When I started my business, I thought I was doing it to take control of my environment, once and for all.

After serving as a medic in Iraq and returning home, PTSD showed up in ways I didn’t expect. Every workplace felt like a minefield of triggers. Healthcare environments, in particular, became overwhelming. I thought the solution was to create my own business, my own safe space where no one else could push me past my limits.

The further I got into entrepreneurship, the more I realized that wasn’t my true reason.

It wasn’t just about control.

It wasn’t even about freedom.

It was about answering a higher calling. One that I couldn’t fully hear until I slowed down and reconnected with my deeper purpose.

Why We Need a Daily Connection to Our Purpose

As entrepreneurs, it’s easy to lose sight of why we started, primarily when our initial motivation stems from pain, burnout, trauma, or a desire to escape a toxic environment.

Running a business from a place of fear or avoidance doesn’t lead to peace.

It often recreates the same patterns of overwork and overwhelm we thought we left behind.

Our purpose isn’t just a one-time realization. It’s something we return to again and again, like an anchor that keeps us steady when everything else feels uncertain.

When we reconnect daily, we build businesses that reflect the life we’re meant to live, not just the one we’re trying to survive.

The Morning Practice That Keeps Me Aligned

This practice became my lifeline in those early years. It takes just 5–10 minutes and helps bring clarity back when everything feels chaotic.

  1. Sit in stillness. Before checking email or scrolling, take a few deep breaths and let your nervous system settle.

  2. Ask these two questions:

    1. What do I need to know today?

    2. What would make today feel meaningful?

  3. Write whatever comes up. Let the answers flow without judgment.

This simple practice helped me shift from surviving to truly listening to what I was here to do.

I use a Morning Aligned Journal to write down my daily intentions.
